WIDE.txt Version 6.6a
You may now set your ALIAS to WIDE. Your station symbol will be GREEN to show
that you have a WIDE alias.
This capability was added so that some WELL SITUATED stations that also run
APRS can serve as WIDE area digipeaters temporarily. It should be noted that
too many WIDE's can really screw up the NET! And by becomming a WIDE, you are
no longer serving as a RELAY for mobiles in your area. Use WIDE cautiously.
Be sure your APRS NETWORK GURU's understand that you are setting to WIDE and
that everyone agrees that it is best for the network.
NO ONE can easily tell that you are WIDE. BE SURE THAT EVERYONE AGREES!
Now that you understand these cautions, and you proceed to set your station
as WIDE, then you should frequently use the OPS-COMM-TNC command to check
your MYAlias just to be sure. Don't forget, hi. Others now depend on you...
CAUTION: APRS stations and ESPECIALLY WIDES should run LOW POWER, around 10
watts or less so that they do not unnecessarily QRM satellite users at 145.8.
The function of a WIDE is to HEAR mobiles. NOT to be an aligator!
